With 4 weeks left in the South Eastern Conference football season, the matchup has been set for the SEC Football Championship game. On December 6th 2008 the number one ranked Alabama Crimson Tide will square off against the number three Florida Gators at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Although a championship in the premier conference in college football is a nice feather in the cap, the real prize is that the winner of the SEC Championship game is pretty much guaranteed a spot in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) National Championship game. The winner of the SEC Championship game will likely face the winner of the Big 12 Conference. Currently, the undefeated Texas Tech Red Raiders and Oklahoma Sooners are the front runners for this title.
The biggest challenge for both teams, from now until then, is not fumbling on their way to the SEC Championship Game . #1 Alabama will face Mississippi State on 11/15 and Auburn on 11/29 at home atBrian Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa before the title game. The #3 Gators will play 3 more games including South Carolina on 11/15 and Citadel on 11/22 at home at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, before wrapping up the regular season against Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium on 11/29. The Florida Gators have more opportunities to get tripped up these last few games- especially with a tough road game against a rival, ranked opponent in the Florida State University Seminoles.
The SEC Championship football game will be held in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta Georgia for the fourteenth consecutive year (since 1994). This will be the first appearance by the Alabama Crimson Tide in the championship game since 1999 and the sixth (6th) overall. In each of 5 previous Alabama title game appearances, the Tide has played the Florida Gators. Alabama has won just 2 of the 5 title game matchups. Tickets to the highly anticipated SEC College Football Championship game are already being distributed to Alabama and Florida football fans throughout the nation. Officials in Florida are distributing tickets based on a “Priority Point” system for current Gator’s season ticket holders. For these current season ticket holders, tickets will be available until November 16 2008. The cheapest of these tickets will be $70 each. For Crimson Tide fans, tickets will be first distributed through the “TidePride” club. Remaining tickets will be sold on the Alabama University athletic website to fill out the remaining ticket orders. A total of thirty-one thousand (31,000) tickets will be reserved for fans of both teams.
