Big 12 Breakdown: Oklahoma vs. Texas Tech | Big 12 Breakdown: Oklahoma vs. Texas Tech |

This weekend’s Big 12 matchup between #2 Texas Tech and #5 Oklahoma will garner the attention of college football fans everywhere. Not only will this game settle the Big XII South Division title but it will also play a large role in determining who will earn a berth to the BCS National Championship game. Should the Red Raiders lose to the Sooners on Sunday, a potential 3-way tie for the South Division is likely. A loss and the currently undefeated Texas Tech squad would move into a tie with one loss teams Texas and Oklahoma. In that event, the winner would come down to the BCS rankings and it’s anyone’s guess as to who would come out on top of that given the scenario described above. The computer average that account for 1/3 of the BCS rankings is likely to significantly change in the remaining weeks of the NCAA football season. Oklahoma with games against tough opponents Texas Tech and Oklahoma State will likely see a boost in their average , while Texas, who plays Texas A&M, and Tech, who plays Oklahoma and Baylor, will likely see a bit of a drop. Further muddying the waters is the fact another one-third of the BCS ranking system is determined by the coaches poll. The Texas Tech coach and Longhorns coaches each have a vote in the BCS coaches poll while Oklahoma coach Stoops does not. Should the Big 12 title come down to the coaches poll expect some heavy lobbying by each of these teams as they frantically try to convince other coaches that their team is deserving of the Big 12 title. If Texas Tech wins the picture becomes much more clear. A win and Texas Tech would be the undisputed Big 12 South Champions (given they beat Baylor) and will likely make it to the BCS Championship game for the first time in school history. Texas Tech got into the BCS picture with a much improved defense and a vastly improved running game. The Red Raiders always have had potent passing attack with two Heisman candidates at quarterback and wide receiver but the more balanced attack has given opposing defenses fits. Oklahoma, too, has a potent offense averaging a whooping 51.4 points a game. This game has the potential to be an absolute shootout as Texas Tech averages a very respectable 47.9 points a game. No matter what the outcome this game will be one of the most exciting games in college football this year. |
