The National Finals Rodeo is the greatest rodeo event in the world today. The NFR is put on each year by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). Because of its importance to the sport, it is occasionally referred to as the World Series of Rodeo or the Super Bowl of Rodeo. The NFR is held in early December in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center arena. The Thomas & Mack Center is the on-campus venue for basketball at UNLV.

Participants at the National Finals Rodeo compete in seven events. From that eight world champions are crowned; one for each of the 7 events and an overall championship who participated in more than one event. The seven NFR events are: bareback riding, barrel racing, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping and time-down roping. The world champions are actually from the money earned during the entire year, but the cash prizes at the NFR are so large that they usually influence the outcome and thus establish the world champion.

Since the National Finals Rodeo is the premiere rodeo event, it has a long and rich history. The first NFR was in Dallas, Texas in 1959. In the 60's the NFR moved to Los Angeles and then Oklahoma City. 1985 was the year that the National Finals Rodeo first was held in Las Vegas, and it has been held there every year since. During the 10 days of the event, more than 170,000 will come through the doors at the Thomas & Mack Center to see the NFR.
